What to expect once they arrive home from the hospital?

Hey there, I’m going to be a caregiver for my husband soon, who had brain surgery in January. He’s still in the hospital and undergoing physical therapy, and we’re uncertain about what his recovery will look like. I know his coming home is still a long way off, and everything could change in the meantime.

I fully understand that everyone’s recovery and injury is unique. I’m also working, juggling hospital visits, and taking care of our kids (ages 4 and 6), so there’s a lot on my plate. I’m doing my best to research, apply for everything I can, and prepare as much as possible (though I’m pretty sure I’ll never be fully prepared, no matter what).

When you or your loved ones came home from the hospital, what was your experience in terms of how much care you needed? Did someone have to be with you 24/7? What kind of help did you need with daily tasks? Were you able to get around on your own at all, and if so, for how long? Were there any assistive devices that helped, or ones you wish you’d had?

I’m just trying to prepare for what’s ahead and be as present and supportive as I can. Any information on your recovery, especially regarding the level of care needed immediately after coming home, would be incredibly helpful. Thank you so much.
