Has anyone else experienced a brain injury from a hit-and-run? I was a pedestrian in a crosswalk, but I’m not focusing on the driver here—there’s a unique kind of trauma that comes with hit-and-runs. I haven’t seen anyone else talk about being a victim of one. I’m curious about your experiences.
In my case, the driver was never found. I have a strong suspicion they were drunk and/or high—maybe both. It was New Year's Day, so even though it was only 5:30 pm, people were probably still drinking. I remember seeing a statistic once that hit-and-runs involving pedestrians are more common on New Year's. I was just heading home from work, only two minutes away from my apartment. All I wanted was to cross the street, eat some leftover pizza, and cuddle with my cat. Apparently, that was too much to ask.
It’s honestly terrifying how many drunk drivers are out there. Where I live, there’s at least one hit-and-run that results in a fatality every single day, and most of the time, the driver is never found. It’s insane. Sometimes I get angry at whoever did it, and it almost feels like some cosmic punishment for every mistake I’ve ever made (though I know that’s not the case—it just feels that way). My message is simple: if you’re intoxicated, don’t get behind the wheel. Do whatever you want, just don’t risk someone else’s life.
